Appraisal of Antique Jewelryl

A Real antique ring will display "detail" and craftsmanship!

Many antique rings, especially engagement ones are fairly simple in nature.

Old, Vintage and Antique Rings & Antique Engagement Rings

Looking for antique rings, an old engagement ring or vintage wedding bands?

Before you go any further, understand what to look for and how to value it!

If the ring is to have a diamond, the usual valuation will apply -- diamond clarity, color and carat weight. But, this is probably nothing you did not already know.

Now, for antique or vintage rings, here are some other factors you need to be aware of and consider:

-- True antiques date from a time when craftsmanship and reputation really meant something, so expect a fairly high quality diamond setting. If you have it appraised before you buy and the stone quality is not up "vintage" standards, it is very possible that it was replaced.

-- If the rings originated far enough back, then it is likely to have a European cut stone. Many diamonds of this type will vividly display the characteristics of this "European cut". Look for this when you have the ring appraised.

-- Modern diamonds are mainly cut by laser and have precise facets. Expect true antiques to have older hand cut stones -- there should be more variation in the proportions of individual facets. These variations show the mark and signature of artist who handcrafted the stone and add value.

-- Finally, true antiques (engagement included) are more likely to display detail and workmanship. Expect it! Remember, that was "then" not "now" -- jewelers took pride and care in handcrafting individual rings.

Know these things and have a valuation done on the ring. Ask these questions of your appraiser.
